Week 8: The Graduation Guide

Week 8: The Graduation Guide

“You did it. Now don’t screw it up.” – With Love, Monica

It’s here. Week 8. The moment your little potato becomes your responsibility. And while we’ve covered medical, manners, crate training, energy management, stimulation, gear, poop, and why your puppy shouldn’t be chewing couch fringe… we’re not done just yet.

This isn’t just goodbye. This is your hand-off moment. But like any good teacher, I’m leaving you with the tools, not just the test.

✅ Final Prep Checklist

Before your puppy sets one paw out of my care, make sure you’ve:

  • ☑️ Scheduled your first vet visit

  • ☑️ Ordered NuVet or your chosen supplement

  • ☑️ Purchased food (Iams Large Breed- Yellow Bag)

  • ☑️ Read the Puppy 101 blog

  • ☑️ Bought teething toys and stimulation puzzles

  • ☑️ Read through all 2-8 weeks of the This Course

Still with me? Good. You’re already ahead of 90% of new owners.

🧰 Week 8 Gear Roundup

“You don’t need 500 pet gadgets. You need the right tools – the ones that save your sanity and train your dog at the same time.”
Let’s break it down by what it solves.

🚗 For Travel & Safety

✔️ Car Seatbelt Buckle Adapter
Secures your puppy in the backseat using their collar or martingale.
Why? It keeps them from becoming a flying fur missile during a brake check.

✔️ Hands-Free Leash (Adjustable)
Worn around your waist. Keeps your pup one foot from your side for tether training.
Why? It reinforces calm following and leash respect with every step.

✔️ Corkscrew Ground Anchor + Long Lead (15 to 30 ft)
Gives your puppy yard time even without a fence.
Why? It provides space to explore but still forces proximity to you – which builds trust and focus.

🍽️ For Feeding & Gut Health

✔️ Slow Feeder Bowl
Slows them down during mealtime to prevent gulping, gas, and bloating.
Why? It teaches patience and improves digestion. No more scarf-and-barf.

✔️ NuVet Supplement (Referral Code: 25043)
Immune support that bridges the transition off mom’s milk.
Why? It’s a daily treat that supports their skin, coat, gut, and resilience – without the gimmicks.

🏠 For Structure & Routine

✔️ Amazon Crate with Divider and Single Pull Latch
Adjusts as your puppy grows and locks securely in one smooth pull.
Why? It creates a den they feel safe in. Too much space too soon equals crate accidents. Don’t skip the divider.

✔️ Expandable Puppy Gates
Used to block off rooms or create a small, safe play area.
Why? It teaches boundaries early and keeps them from free-roaming the house before they’ve earned it.

🧠 For Stimulation & Focus

✔️ Puzzle Toys and Kongs
Fill them with frozen food, peanut butter, or kibble paste.
Why? They challenge the brain and keep busy mouths from chewing furniture.

✔️ Suction Cup Tether
Useful during brushing, baths, or training sessions.
Why? It helps your puppy practice calm restraint without leash frustration.

✔️ Training Treats and Clicker (optional)
Soft, small treats work best for quick reinforcement.
Why? Rewards are your puppy’s currency. Spend them with purpose.

Every item here has been tested in real-world chaos. Not picked for aesthetics. Picked because they work. They help create calm behavior, safer play, and better connection.

The point isn’t just to buy things. It’s to use them with intention.

🧠 You Are the Environment Now

The second your puppy walks into your home, you are the structure. You are the reward. You are the redirector, the calmer of chaos, the provider of boundaries and love.

There’s no more breeder handholding. No more default routines.

But don’t panic – the structure we gave your puppy here can absolutely carry over. You just have to be consistent.

  • Use the same crate cues

  • Stick with short bursts of training

  • Reinforce calm behavior with touch, not excitement

  • Don’t “just let it go for today” because you’re tired – that’s how bad habits start

🧭 Your Puppy’s New Map

Think of your puppy like a GPS that’s been learning one zip code – mine. Now you’re plugging in a whole new route: your home, your smells, your rules, your schedule.

That transition is beautiful – and messy. But here’s your north star:

Consistency creates security.
Security builds trust.
Trust unlocks learning.

So take it slow. Don’t introduce 20 people on Day 1. Don’t expect perfect behavior when you’re still figuring out where to hang the leash.

📅 Integrate Your Mock Daily Schedule

You’ve got your version of the Mock Daily Routine (see “Puppy 101” for the downloadable). But here’s the short version:

Morning:

  • Potty → Food → Potty → Light play

  • Nap in crate

  • Potty → Calm stimulation (chew, snuffle, puzzle)

Afternoon:

  • Training bursts (2–5 minutes at a time)

  • Crate nap

  • Potty → Play → Structured tether or training walk

Evening:

  • Dinner

  • Potty → Crate entry

  • Final potty + calm cue for overnight crate

Repeat. Tweak. Stick with it.

🎥 Need Extra Help?

Remember, the Labrador Lounge isn’t just this series.

You’ve got:

  • 📚 20+ in-depth blogs

  • 📹 Training and behavior videos

  • 📝 Printable checklists

  • ❤️ And me – yes, I check in, and yes, I care

So don’t be afraid to explore the bottom of the Lounge. It’s full of tools, not fluff.

🐾 Final Words (The Monica Way)

You’re going to mess up. Everyone does.

But effort? It shows. And your puppy will notice. Every redirect. Every calm entrance. Every boundary followed through on. Every time you choose discipline with love over indulgence with regret.

This whole journey? Worth it.
You’re building a dog that other people wish they had.

So go ahead – graduate.
And then? Raise the bar.
